73rd Wireless Innovation Forum Working Meeting, Melbourne, FL, USA — November 01, 2012
— PrismTech™, a global leader in standards-based, performance-critical middleware, and Space Coast Communication Systems, a leader in Software Defined Radio
-based RF Test Equipment, today announced a technology partnership to offer Spectra
™ on the SCA Open Architecture Radio (SOAR).
The SOAR product builds off the same multi-channel software radio infrastructure that Space Coast uses in the highly successful line of eXplorer Satellite Simulators. In its current offering SOAR is available in 2, 4 or 8 channel configurations.
“Traditional SDR architecture is stuck in this single board, single channel, single user mentality. It’s funny how little things have changed developmentally in SDR architecture since the time we worked with 20 MHz processors on 8 Mbytes of RAM,” observes John D. Bard, President-CEO of Space Coast Communication Systems, Inc. of Melbourne, FL. “The holy grail of portable software eludes us because developers are hastened to work in development environments that are as identical as possible to fielded hardware. This is the most difficult environment to work in – artificially constraining developers to having to work with customized Operating Environments (OE) spanning multiple disparate compute elements – FPGA, DSP, and GPP. Inevitably OE’s and Application Software are in simultaneous development – just another de-stabilizing effect that undermines the true power of SDR.”
PrismTech is a leading provider of Software Defined Radio (SDR) and Software Communications Architecture (SCA) solutions. The Spectra product suite for radio system developers and integrators provides Commercial-off-the-Shelf (COTS) development tools and software infrastructure including the Spectra CX – model-driven development tool, Spectra CF – a high performance, ultra low footprint, SCA Core Framework, and Spectra CDB – a fully integrated and optimized SDR middleware stack.
“The combination of PrismTech’s Spectra SDR products, the CX development tool, ORB middleware and Core Framework, together with the SOAR radio system provides a robust and powerful development environment for SDR systems,” said Vince Kovarik, PhD, Spectra CTO, PrismTech. “As noted by John, Spectra on SOAR enables the developer to focus on the waveform using a comprehensive, stable and integrated development environment, instead of taking valuable development time to integrate drivers, extensions and other software on target hardware. Simply put, the combination of PrismTech’s industry leading tools and middleware with Space Coast’s SOAR platform offers radio development labs the most complete COTS multi-channel, multi-developer, environment for waveform development and porting.”
The “Spectra on SOAR” option is now available from Space Coast.
