Chief Technology Officer Angelo Corsaro, Ph.D., will present on the Data Distribution Service (DDS) standard during the Object Management Group’s (OMG™) Industrial Internet of Things Standards at Work Event in Berlin, Germany in June. A widely known and cited expert in the field of real-time and distributed systems, Dr. Corsaro will address “Reactive and Data-Centric Architectures with DDS.”

The OMG’s DDS is a data-centric standard that is ideally suited for Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) systems. Among its many benefits, it provides the necessary scalability, performance, and quality-of-service (QoS) features needed to support IIoT applications.

Reactive and Data-Centric Architectures with DDS

Abstract:  An increasing number of Software Architects realize that data is the most important asset of a system and start embracing the Data-Centric revolution ( – setting data at the center of their architecture and modelling applications as “visitors” to the data. At the same time, architects have also realized how reactive architectures ( facilitate the design of scalable, fault-tolerant and high performance systems.  Few architects have yet realised how reactive and data-centric architectures are two sides of the same coin and as such should always go together.  This presentation explains why reactive data-centric architecture is the future and how the OMG DDS Standard is uniquely positioned to support this paradigm shift. A series of use cases will highlight how the data-centric revolution is being applied in practice and what measurable benefits it is providing.

Vortex intelligent data sharing platform selected by Harbrick for world’s first OS for building autonomous vehicles

PrismTech’s Vortex Intelligent Data Sharing Platform Selected by Harbrick for World’s First Operating System for Building Autonomous Vehicles

Robotics company Harbrick has selected Vortex™ to serve as the intelligent data sharing platform for its PolySync, the world’s first out-of-box operating system (OS) for autonomous vehicles.

PolySync is comprised of a set of software tools and services that make it easier to build advanced autonomous vehicles.  Similar to the benefits Android and iOS provide to mobile apps developers, PolySync is an OS for autonomous vehicles that provides a massive plug and play ecosystem of sensors, actuators, computing hardware, and third party software.  It uses a standardized API that transforms autonomous vehicle development into app development.  PolySync handles the sensor drivers, data management, and fault tolerance.

Vortex enabled Harbrick to utilize development resources more effectively.  Specifically, Harbrick would have needed to employ a team 10 times larger over the period of one year to build the required feature set for the first commercial release.  Vortex tooling has been measured to reduce debugging by as much as 52 percent and increase new feature development by a multiple of 16.

Juggling Data Connectivity Protocols for Industrial IoT : Andrew Foster Reports

Real-time needs are key in multiprotocol industrial IoT.

With much legacy equipment existing with older protocols and requiring diverse real-time needs, the Industrial IoT will not soon, if ever, use a single data-connectivity standard.

 The projected benefits that can be gained from the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) have been well documented during the past several years by the likes of General Electric, Accenture and other organizations that have conducted extensive research in this area. In fact, these benefits in revenue, cost reductions and energy consumption are now coming to fruition in a variety of smart city, smart farming, transportation and other industry sectors.

A great example is the Connected Boulevard program in Nice, France, which uses Industrial Internet technologies, including an innovative data-sharing platform, to help manage and optimize all aspects of city management, including parking and traffic, street lighting, waste disposal and environmental quality.

The key to these benefits is the ability to derive value from the data. The data must be accessible wherever it resides and delivered to wherever it’s needed (edge to the cloud) so that it can be analyzed and acted upon in the right amount of time. There are a range protocols currently used to provide this “data-sharing function” within an Industrial Internet system (see chart above). Chief among them are:

  • The Object Management Group’s (OMG) Data Distribution Service for Real-Time Systems (DDS);
  • OASIS’ Advanced Message Queuing Protocol (AMQP);
  • MQ Telemetry Transport (MQTT), a protocol originally developed by IBM but now an OASIS standard;
  • Representational State Transfer (REST), a common style of using HTTP for Web-based applications and not a standard; and,
  • Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP), a software protocol to be used in very simple electronics devices such as Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) that allows them to communicate over the Internet; and,
  • The eXtensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP), the IETF’s formalization of the base XML streaming protocols for instant messaging and presence technology originally developed within the Jabber open-source community.

Atlas Copco Selects PrismTech’s OpenSplice DDS for its Latest Construction and Mining Products
